About Our Town Council

The Town of Ahoskie operates under the Council-Manager form of government. This means that the Town Manager is the chief executive officer and is responsible to carry out policy set by the governing body (Town Council) in administering all affairs of municipal government.

The governing body of the Town consists of the mayor and five council members. The five council members serve staggerd terms. Elections for the mayor and council members are held in November of every other year. The mayor is elected for a two-year term and council members are elected for four-year terms.

The Council has adopted "Rules of Procedure" in accordance with state law and town ordinances, under which it operates as a governing body. In order for the Council to conduct a meeting, a majority or quorum of the actual membership of the Council must be present. Most issues require a simple majority vote in order to be approved, denied or adopted. The Mayor cannot vote on issues, except to break a tie vote.
