Description of Collection System or Treatment Process:
Wastewater treatment uses physical, biological and chemical processes to remove pollutants from water so it can safely be returned to the environment. The wastewater BNR plant is rated to handle an average of 1.3 million gallons per day. The BNR plant discharges to the Ahoskie Creek in the Chowan River Basin. The spray irrigation system consists of a 406,000 gallon per day irrigation facility having 189.43 acres of disposal area with no discharge of wastes to surface waters and a conjunctive reclaimed water system with five utilization sites.
The Wastewater plants treated approximately 261.3 million gallons of wastewater in 2017. The monthly average flow was 21.8 million gallons and the daily average was 0.71 million gallons. The BNR plant was compliant for all permit monitoring requirements. The annual removal rate for the BNR was 99.1% for the oxygen demanding pollutants for the year. The average biological oxygen demand for the effluent was <2.0 parts per million. The annual removal rate was 99.3% for total suspended solids for the year. The average annual total suspended solids for the effluent was <2.5 parts per million. The average annual total nitrogen discharged to the Ahoskie Creek was 1.5 parts per million. The average annual total phosphorus discharged to the Ahoskie Creek was 0.375 parts per million. Approximately 703,000 gallons of digested sludge was hauled by Granville Farms, Inc. and land applied as fertilizer on farmland. Approximately 648,000 gallons of digested sludge was applied on land at the WWTP per permit WQ0036706. The Wastewater Irrigation System treated approximately 3.0 million gallons of wastewater in 2017 along with 40.4 million gallons of rain water. Approximately 16.25 million gallons was applied on 189.43 acres. The reclaimed water utilization system was not used in 2017.
This information is required by North Carolina General Statue 143-215.1C. A notice will be placed in the water and sewer bill for one billing cycle including information on how to obtain this report. The report will be posted on the Town of Ahoskie website at www.ahoskie-nc.org.
