Wastewater treatment uses physical, biological and chemical processes to remove pollutants from water so it can safely be returned to the environment.
The Wastewater Treatment Plant treated approximately 201 million gallons of wastewater in FY 2011-2012. The monthly average flow was 17 million gallons and the daily average was 0.55 million gallons. The peak flow of 2.8 million gallons per day was recorded on August 28, 2011 as a result of hurricane “Irene”. The plant was compliant for all monitoring permit requirements with the exception of pH on 3/27, 3/28, and 3/29 in which the pH exceeded the limit of 9.0 s.u. The annual removal rate was 99.1% for the oxygen demanding pollutants for the year. The average biological oxygen demand for the effluent was 2.6 parts per million. The annual removal rate was 99.2% for total suspended solids for the year. The average annual total suspended solids for the effluent was 2.6 parts per million. The average annual total nitrogen discharged to the Ahoskie Creek was 1.5 parts per million. The average annual total phosphorus discharged to the Ahoskie Creek was 0.94 parts per million. Approximately 7 million gallons of sludge was wasted to the aerobic digesters for FY 2011- 2012. Approximately 0.91 million gallons of digested sludge was hauled by Granville Farms, Inc. and land applied as fertilizer on farmland.
